Rich Piana’s career abruptly ended after his untimely passing on August 25, 2017. Ever since news broke that he was taken into a hospital a couple of weeks prior to his death, bodybuilders and fitness enthusiasts across the globe were anxiously waiting for his fast recovery. Unfortunately, he didn’t make it out alive after suffering from a number of heartbreaking complications.

Even if it has been more than three years since he died, the fitness industry will never be the same.. After experiencing a devastating loss of another icon, life must still go on. With that said, let us all reminisce about his life and contributions during his decades-long career in the industry that he was passionately part of.

Early Life & Career

The incredibly famous and unforgettable Rich Piana was born and raised in the Sunshine State of California. His fascination for bodybuilding began as early as six years old. As a young boy, he was tremendously influenced by his mother. He would go to the gym and witness her intensely train for her upcoming bodybuilding contests. After six years, he knew what he wanted to pursue so he decided to follow the footsteps of his mother.

A few years after his first foray in bodybuilding, he started joining and competing in various teen bodybuilding contests. By the age of 18, he already had won numerous titles under his belt, including Mr. Teen California where he garnered an overall perfect score. He also achieved applaudable placements in other several state and national competitions for teenagers that he joined back in the day.

He continued competing during his prime years and eventually won the Mr. California title 10 years after his Mr. Teen California victory. Four years after his impressive state win, he once again emerged victorious and won the Men’s Bodybuilding (Super Heavyweight) contest in 2003. All the titles under his belt didn’t deter him from joining more competitions though, he still continued to aim for more wins and made himself proud in 2009 by winning the Border States Classic Championship and NPC Sacramento Pro contents in the same year.

Without a doubt, Rich was one of the most popular guys to ever grace the bodybuilding and fitness industry. Aside from his remarkable achievements, he was also recognized for his massive size and chiseled physique. He was so big that at his best, he weighed around 290 lbs with biceps measuring 23.5 inches around. It was also reported that he was “double the size” of the average man not just physically but personality wise as well.

Business & Acting Life

After his bodybuilding days were over, Rich started investing his time, energy and efforts into acting and entrepreneurship. Apart from his gigantic income from his real estate properties, he also began immersing himself into the world of acting.

Due to his remarkable figure and bodybuilding fame, doors of opportunities opened for him, and this paved the way for him to appear in a variety of bodybuilding commercials and shows where he would make between $50,000 – $100,000 a year. On top of that, he also became a noteworthy internet bodybuilding sensation which gave him more sources of income.

He took advantage of his popularity on social media by starting different businesses  including a nutritional supplement company called 5% Nutrition, a food preparation company and a clothing line company too.

His business endeavours became successful and the possibilities were endless for Rich until his body gave up as the side effects of performance-enhancing drugs took its toll on his health in August 2017.

Top Social Media Moments

Rich has undeniably become a role model for many aspiring bodybuilders all over the world. However, it’s safe to say that one of the reasons why he became a social media star was due to the fact that he was very vocal and honest in his videos. Whether it be not being afraid to admit that he was using steroids and growth hormones for more than 20 years way back in 2016, or just simply voicing his un-sugar coated opinions, netizens can tell that the heavily-tattooed and blue-eyed bodybuilder was a force to be reckoned with for his transparent lifestyle, unapologetic demeanor, expletive-filled insights and larger-than-life personality.

Despite the harsh reality that he is gone forever, there’s no denying that he has impacted a lot of lives.  In fact, his Youtube account is still drawing hundreds of thousands of views even up to this day.

His “Bigger By The Day” series which is like an ultimate how-to guide to become big  (Watch Episode 1 here) and unique philosophy on life gave a lot of workout enthusiasts that much needed push to keep going. Even though some people don’t like him for being too straightforward and brutal, others are quick to dismiss negative comments about him because he inspired them to be the best version of themselves, whether that be going natural or following the same route as him just to get bigger.

Aside from his “Bigger By The Day” videos, his other workout videos were legendary. Some of his workouts were not the typical workouts, including his mind blowing 8-hour arm workout (Watch it here)  that he believed was a phenomenal way to gain size in a quick manner.

He also shared his 4-month program in another controversial video where he explained his cycle and steroid choices. Although he was a longtime user of drugs, he never encouraged others to follow him or insisted anyone to use potentially dangerous substances for a long period of time.

These are just some of the top social media moments that will go down in history as one of the most informative, honest and open videos when it comes to bodybuilding. Not everyone will appreciate it though but one thing is for sure, his legacy will live forever and will benefit (or even harm) future generations to come depending on how they will apply his no-holds-barred advice.

Love him or hate him, Rich Piana will never be forgotten. Even his signature mantras “If you Love it, kill it” and “Whatever it takes!” is something people in this day and age who want to go after their dreams can get a lot of inspiration from.
